an all-new advanced emdr master class II

This EMDRIA-Approved advanced course will help practitioners apply EMDR theory and practice to clients who have suffered early developmental trauma and have significant attachment issues that manifest in pervasive difficulties with self and others. Participants will walk away with a deep appreciation of the "art" of EMDR psychotherapy and be able to successfully integrate EMDR into their own theoretical orientation. In addition to lecture, discussion and videotape of actual clients, participants in this advanced program will be expected to work on their own formative experiences as a means of optimizing their learning in this retreat setting. Come prepared to experience first-hand, the transformative power of EMDR that can change your life as well as your practice!

learning objectives

In this workshop, we will begin by reviewing the different attachment styles and the patterns of response that develop as adaptations to early caregivers. We will learn to recognize the hallmarks of a “good enough” attachment relationship with your client and explore how that sets the groundwork for accessing formative relational experiences—some of which are outside the domain of language and explicit memory networks.

We will also explore how these patterns can generate internal emotional responses in the therapist. We’ll learn how to utilize these responses in ways that can bring otherwise unavailable material into the present moment to allow for a reprocessing experience that can yield profound personal transformation for the client.

Through lecture, discussion, videotape, live demonstration and small group experiences, you will gain concrete knowledge about attachment styles and the nervous system and you will practice using concrete, practical strategies that facilitate reprocessing in cases of complex developmental trauma. These include:

  • How to utilize the moment-to-moment experience in and out of reprocessing sessions;
  • How to identify a “predominant” state of mind with respect to attachment as a means of accessing early experiences where this state of mind was developed;
  • To identify specific attachment strategies that correspond to the different attachment styles;
  • How to identify and work with states of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activation as they relate to certain attachment styles both in and out of reprocessing sessions;
  • How to facilitate the client’s ability to reflect coherently on their early experiences instead of being completely absorbed in them or over-identified with them;
  • How to identify and track somatic responses as a means of bringing into awareness implicit aspects of experience that can be reprocessed;
  • How to facilitate repair and integration of experience in reprocessing sessions through the use of advanced cognitive interweave strategies;
  • How to apply mindfulness skills to facilitate an awareness of your own internal responses to the client’s process and how to best understand and utilize your experience.
