This Master Class in EMDR is designed for clinicians who are seeking to deepen their skills as an EMDR psychotherapist working with developmental trauma. Participants will learn how to use EMDR to facilitate the uncoupling of negative core beliefs and core affects from more positive, adaptive aspect of self that have been depressed, dissociated or otherwise unavailable. Participants will also learn the art and timing of EMDR as a case evolves and issues shift from foreground to background, as well as expanding the clinician's understanding and application of cognitive interweave.

learning objectives

  • Identify one or two core issues that inform client difficulties and develop a treatment plan for EMDR reprocessing;

  • Recognize at least three characteristic patterns of response that relate to client attachment issues and develop EMDR strategies to challenge them;
  • List ways to distinguish between primary and secondary identity issues using the developmental plateaus of responsibility, safety and choices to conceptualize cases over time;
  • Identify at least three ways to optimize the client's capacity to successfully integrate more adaptive skills into the current context of their lives;
  • Apply the eight Levels of Cognitive Interweave Strategies (LOCI) to address developmental deficits and facilitate client processing;
  • List the ways to modify the three-pronged approach of past, present and future to address the clinical demands of the case.

workshop requirements

Attendees must have completed an EMDRIA approved (50 hours) Basic EMDR Training. Familiarity with Francine Shapiro's text, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures is required. Proof of completion of Basic Training parts 1 & 2 must be provided along with a copy of your professional license when registering. Additionally, we recommend participants have been actively using EMDR for at least 1 year. Attendance at entire workshop is required to receive credit.

about the presenter

Deany Laliotis, LICSW is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in treatment of traumatic stress disorders and attachment issues. She is a Senior Trainer for EMDR Institute, Inc., where she has been of the faculty since 1993. As an EMDRIA-approved trainer and consultant, she presents world-wide on advanced clinical applications of EMDR. She is the co-director of EMDR of Greater Washington and maintains a private practice in Washington, DC.

Deany has contributed a chapter titled, "Healing the Wounds of Attachment: An EMDR Relational Approach," in, Psychotherapist Revealed: Therapists Speak about Self-Disclosure where she writes about the relational component of EMDR psychotherapy. She has also recently co-authored an article with Francine Shapiro on, "EMDR and the Adaptive Information Processing Model: Integrative Treatment and Case Conceptualization," which is published in a special edition of the Journal of Clinical Social Work on Integrative Psychotherapy, October 12, 2010.
